Shima Onsen, a Famous Hot Spring in Gunma

Shima Onsen is a hot spring resort located in northwestern Gunma Prefecture Joshin’etsu-kogen National Park. In 1954, it acquired the first national designation of a hot spring health resort. Starting from the cherry blossom season in spring, the area stays so cool and comfortable that it is said to be like a summer resort. Visitors can enjoy many attractions throughout each season, including beautiful colored leaves in fall, and hot springs in the winter snow.

The name Shima Onsen was derived from the legend of a hot spring that can cure 40,000 health conditions. It is also known to beautify skin.

In addition to the many inns that provide a welcoming, traditional atmosphere, visitors can enjoy day trips to the hot spring, and use the foot bath and drink the spring water in many places throughout the area.

Offering convenient transportation to Shima Hot Spring, Kan-etsu Transportation Co., Ltd. operates a daily round-trip service via the Shima Onsen-Go express bus between Yaesu Street by Tokyo Station and Shima Hot Spring. The bus service operates twice a day from December to May.

Visit Shima Hot Spring via express bus to enjoy healing from nature and see animals in their natural habitat.
