Ushijima Shrine is located next to Sumida Park, which faces the Sumida River.

This shrine was built in 860. It is said to originally have been an area for grazing cattle, which is why the shrine’s name contains “Ushi,” the Japanese word for cow. The shrine grounds have the famous “rubbing cow” statue. It is said that rubbing the part of the cow statue that corresponds to the part of your body that’s in pain will help cure your ailment, so definitely check it out when you visit. The shrine will have nighttime illumination in the period up to February 15th! You can see amazing scenery that’s quite different from the daytime.
